Train to Teach

“I had been working at Viridis for two years as a 1:1 TA and then as a General TA, when I applied for the apprenticeship. My experience working at Viridis ignited my desire to embark on teacher training as I am passionate about the community we work in and all of the invaluable work we do. The apprenticeship was an amazing route for me because not only does the programme offer a salary alongside your studies, but also the important opportunity to work in a classroom from the start, which allowed me to quickly develop and implement the skills I was leaning at University. After I graduated, I acknowledged the momentous impact the apprenticeship route made, I felt prepared for teaching and confident in the role. The apprenticeship’s success was largely down to the support I received from both my mentor and all the staff members in my team, all of which guided me through the year. Now two years on, I continue to receive support and feedback from my mentor and team in order to ensure that I am continuing to grow and develop within my role as a teacher.”

“After working with children aged 3 – 11 in Spain, I decided that I would return to London to become a qualified teacher. While I was nervous about the prospect of being a class teacher, the apprenticeship scheme at Viridis was already well established and I was guided through the year by an experienced mentor. I had the opportunity to plan, deliver and reflect on lessons, which meant I was continually improving my practice, while developing a solid understanding of the curriculum. As well as gaining knowledge from my mentor, the wider school team and subject leaders were extremely supportive. By the end of the apprenticeship year, I felt confident in my ability to plan and deliver engaging lessons for all pupils in my class. Since qualifying, I have become the Computing lead at Viridis, which has provided me with exciting new opportunities to develop my practice further!”

“The opportunity to join Viridis as an apprentice came at the perfect time. I was encouraged to make the leap to progress my career in education, and I felt confident in the decision thanks to the supportive environment at Viridis. Throughout my apprenticeship, I received support from both my colleagues and mentors. The guidance I was offered allowed me to balance teaching with my studies, which was crucial in making the transition from an apprentice to a qualified teacher. From observing experienced educators to being part of a welcoming team, I always felt like I had the resources and encouragement needed to succeed. I gained invaluable knowledge from my school environment, far more than I could have acquired from university alone. Since completing my apprenticeship, I have been fortunate to continue growing at Viridis where I am currently working as the SENCO. Viridis has provided me with multiple pathways for career progression, and I look forward to continuing to develop my skills and contribute to the school’s success.”

“After graduating, I joined Viridis as a teaching assistant. My appreciation for the school’s welcoming and inclusive culture motivated me to pursue the apprenticeship to become a teacher. My TA experience prepared me for this next step, enabling me to engage directly with students and staff while adapting teaching methods on the spot. I now mentor PGCE students and apprentice teachers, enhancing collaboration within Viridis. These roles have enabled me to make a significant impact on student learning and contribute to the professional development of teachers within our school community.”
